In the past few years, China has always been known as the world’s biggest bitcoin mining hub. This is largely due to Beijing’s ban on crypto mining that was implemented back in August 2021. Most of the world’s global hashrate came from China but they don’t have that anymore as the United States is now the global leader.
Due to the ban, the US share of the global hashrate went from 17% in April 2021 to 35% in August. The second country that benefited from this is Kazakhstan who rose to 18% in the same time period. This was a huge shift in the mining industry because China had such a tight grip on the top spot.
The reason why China’s state council banned cryptocurrency mining and trading were due to environmental and financial concerns. This move prompted miners to try and find politicians who were in favour of crypto and they had the means to secure cheap and sustainable energy.
This ban has strengthened the industry outside of China with miners enjoying a digital coin mining spree in the past few months. It has even strengthened the Bitcoin casino industry which includes games and people who play casino esports.
Marathon Digital Holdings chief executive Fred Thiel talked about how much this shutdown has helped non-Chinese miners. He said that the shutdown has been huge for the US industry.
It is interesting to see how bitcoin mining has played out with this news. China has been a superpower in the crypto industry for the longest time but they have lost their footing now. The Chinese state did not stop at just banning mining because they are trying to release their own digital currency sometime soon as they look to have a trial run soon.
Chinese miners have started to transfer the activities to other countries. Kazakhstan has been the biggest benefactor because their rise can be attributed to Chinese miners moving away to mine better.
The situation has started to stabilize after they moved to Kazakhstan but China is not the leading country anymore. At the moment, the US is primed to dominate the scene for the foreseeable future but you should expect Kazakhstan to rise further.
