‘It was pretty overwhelming. I thought I'd just get a couple of people saying, “Hey, I remember surfing, that's cool.” Or maybe, best-case scenario, reconnecting with an old buddy. But it was way, way more than that... By the standards of surfing today, it really doesn't look like much," he says, laughing. "It's just a ramp hanging out in the air, and we would try to launch to this tiny platform, where there was a switch that would blow up the level. It was the first surfing map, but we would mostly just shoot at each other, trying to get to that platform, for hours at a time’.
Which CSGO surf map should you play?
There are many choices when it comes to surfing in CSGO. Since you are only starting out, surf_beginner is the best choice as it is the easiest map that offers many avenues to learn surfing. There are some guides and modes that you can control if you want a better challenge.
However, if you really want to play on a map that is more advanced than the first one, there are still many choices. You can play surf_fortum,h or even surf_utopia. These maps offer you a higher skill ceiling which involves longer and trickier jumps. Since you can play this all by yourself, you have the chance to play this offline as well as long as you have the CSGO client open.
If you want to play with friends, you can still play that way because there are servers for these maps. You can play with many others on those maps which is a great experience as you can put on races and compare your run times. There is also a community for surfing online which you may have noticed. ‘We were trying really hard to get the community going in those early days’. ‘My buddy Arcade and I, we would leave our computers on overnight to keep the dedicated servers running - we never had professional servers… A lot of those people didn't even know what bunnyhopping was at that point. Remember, this was before YouTube, so this was purely word of mouth, hoping that we would get some retention on the server’.
